Installing solar panels on your home is a great way to power your home with nothing but clean, renewable, and environmentally friendly energy. Of course, nothing in life that’s worth it comes easy.

Solar panel installation can come at a pretty steep initial price. The average cost of a solar panel installation in Massachusetts is $3.09 per watt, which translates to between $13,132 and $17,768 for a complete installation. Where you land in the price range depends on the size and power of the installation. Obviously, the bigger and stronger the system, the more expensive it’ll be. 

Don’t go into shock just yet! The up-front equipment and installation cost might look scary, but it only gets better from there. Remember, you’re going to be saving money on your energy bills the minute they hook the panels up to your home’s energy line. You might even eliminate them! Over time, the panels will pay for themselves.

For residential solar in Massachusetts, the average breakeven period on installing panels is just under seven years.

That might feel like a long time, but if you expect to stay in your home for years to come, it makes solar installation a no-brainer. The average 20-year savings on a solar installation in Massachusetts is a whopping $39,640!

That more than covers the cost of the panels and leaves plenty left over to pad your bank account. Massachusetts also participates in an aggressive net metering campaign that allows property owners who generate more power than they use to sell it back to the utility company for a profit. The more energy you sell back to the utility, the faster you’ll reach the breakeven point on your solar panels.

Those five-digit numbers on the solar panel installation price tag might seem scary, but the state of Massachusetts wants to help relieve some of the sticker shock. To make solar available to more Massachusettsians, there are several state solar incentives that help reduce the cost burden:

  • Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) – A 26% tax credit on any home solar installation in place before December 31, 2022, provided by the federal government. This credit decreases to 22% in 2023.
  • Massachusetts Personal Income Tax Credit – Receive a $1,000 credit or 15% of the solar panel installation costs, whichever is lower. 
  • Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target (SMART) Program – Earn money for the energy produced by your home solar system. Must apply.
  • Net Metering – Get credit on your utility bills for any excess power generated from your home solar system.
  • Solarize Mass – A solar group-buying program designed to split the cost of solar installations for an entire community. 
  • Municipal Light Plant Solar Rebate Program – Get a rebate on any solar system installation of 25 kilowatts or less. Eligibility depends on location. 

Unfortunately, not all solar options are eligible for these incentives. For example, most incentives only apply to people who own their solar panels. If you choose a rent-to-own option, you don’t technically own the system (yet), so you don’t qualify for the incentives. 

Before choosing a solar option, do your research and make sure you understand all the incentives you qualify for. They’ll help immensely with the cost of installation, so don’t leave anything on the table!
